top 11.2.18 recall, all 2018 Outbacks. Keep a least 1/4 tank of gas so you don't run out... 7.9.18 2019 model specs, features and prices announced. 6.1.18 all 2019 Outback and Legacy will have Eyesight as a standard feature. April 10, 2018: Subaru Premium, Limited and Touring 8" radios can be a little glitchy.

all weather rubber floor liners (high sided mats) replace all weather rubber floor mats. 2018 Outbacks started arriving the first week of August.
The ride is quieter and slightly smoother but unless you drive a 2017 (or 16, 15) and then an 18 back to back, it can be hard to tell.
The new dual front zone climate control on Premium, Limited and Touring is much easier to see, the left/right temperature knobs have the temperature displayed on the knob, the clock and outside temp numbers are large, the climate control buttons are white on black visible day or night. The big and obvious change is the all new audio systems.
These are the now the standard for all models- the 6.5" or the 8" systems were first in the 2017 Impreza, and are now in the 2018 Outback, Crosstrek and Legacy.
This is current technology. It might not be state of the art, but its much better in all ways than last years models, and what buyers expect.
You just have to try it to see how easy it is.
The voice control and
With an Android or iPhone smart phone you can use the phone's map on the audio screen which means the ability to speak or find and address or business, easily make and receive handsfree calls and texts.
With Android you can use either the Waze or Google map, and the voice 'find' command brings Google's search functions to your screen.
The rear view camera now has active steering path lines which helps when backing up into a parking spot.
Turn signal outside mirrors now use LED turn signals.
Eyesight High Beam Assist sensor on Limited and Touring is now integrated into the Eyesight cameras. Premium models still have the large center sensor in front of the rear view mirror that was also on the 17 Limited and Touring
Gone- the silver front underspoiler on Prevous Limited models is no longer available

4/6/17 2018 refreshed Outback to be at the NY Auto Show, along with the new Crosstrek.
NY International Auto Show (NAIS) April 14 - Apr 23.
Its going to be a busy show!
A multitude of upgrades make this worth waiting until July for.. Upgraded audio systems with android auto and apple carplay. Steering Responsive headlights, Rear view camera steering angle lines, Auto locking doors, 10 second power off delay, new interior color (gray). improved blind spot symbols, quieter, smoother riding....
The 18 Outback keeps the same model lineup - 2.5i, Premium, Limited, Touring, and 3.6 Limited and Touring. All CVTs.
There are a lot of new features but the biggest change is a seemingly little thing... its automatic locking doors. They're are now (finally) available. I think its the most asked for feature and this will be the first Subaru to have it. Most people just assume the doors lock automatically when the car is driven. Now they will.
New 6.5" and 8" audio systems with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Optional navigation is TomTom with three years of free map updates
New interior Titanium Gray. Continuing are the Slate Black and Warm Ivory, and Java Brown on the Touring models.
New rear seat USB outlets for the back seat passengers.
The rear view backup camera now displays steering lines that move as the steering wheel is turned, indicating where the car is heading in reverse
Steering Responsive Headlights are now available, and are much better than the steering responsive fog lights on the 2017s.
Lane keep assist now starts at 37mph instead of 40,
The blind spot symbols are larger, brighter, and moved from the far side of the mirror to the inner side of the mirror housing for increased visibilty
The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) detects individual tire pressure changes so you don't have to check all 4 tires for the one that's low.
Thicker front driver and passenger window glass to reduce wind noise
Redesigned 18" wheels on Limited and Touring. 2.5i and Premium models continue with 17" silver alloys.
Climate control temperature readings are now on the two dual front zone left/right side dials, and the clock display is larger again
Subaru Starlink audio system (Android or iPhone required) includes Aha, Pandora, iHeart radio, Stitcher, Calendar, Music Player, News and Weather and now includes the same new features found on the 17 Impreza including Magellan navigation (by subscription), eBird local sightings and bird watching locations, Best Parking to locate and compare parking rates, Yelp, Glympse location sharing with friends, Quick Guide car informaton and guide, Eventseeker local events, and RightTrack by Liberty Mutual monitors driving habits (but you have to opt in for this one).
Upgraded steering, suspension and CVT transmission to improve steering feel, ride, and transmission response.
Good and Bad Good (an opinion) > 8" audio system (Premium, Limited, Touring models) is a huge improvement over the previous 7" version. The voice functions, bluetooth pairing, Navigation all work much better. And it has Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Bad (or not so good) > 6.5 audio system on the 2.5i model is very budget. No CD player, FMHD, or SiriusXM. Yes it has Android Auto and Apple Carplay.
these are opinions
disclosure- I traded in a leased 2017 Touring to lease an 18 Touring. The 17 was a 2.5L and the 18 is a 3.6L 6 cylinder. For me it was an excellent upgrade.S mall details.. owning a car means the small details become important. In a few years, this new technology on the 18s means they will hold their value better and be an easier sale than the (soon to be) dated technology on the 17 and prior models. Of course, new models and new features should always be better, and in this case they are.
Yes, the system is a little fussy (glitchy) especially if you tap the touch-screen too quickly. Separate 'radio' and 'media' screens are unnecessary, and the radio station pre-sets are inconvenient.
The CD player doesn't always load (take the CD out and put it back in to load).
And there's no audio 'off' button... really, there's no 'off', its always on. If you don't want any volume when the car is started, leave the volume on 0 when turning the car off.
But overall, this new 8" system is all much better than all the previous models.
> Climate Control on Premium, Limited, and Touring is significantly better than the 2015-2017. The soft white lettering against the black background on the 18s is easier to see even in daylight. That was a serious problem on the 15-17 because in the daytime with headlights on, the climate control thin red lettering against a silver background was very hard to see.
The new, larger dual front zone temperature control knobs show their individual temperature setting, and the larger clock, fan speed, and outside temperature displays are clean and easy to see at a glance.
> Back-up camera display with active steering path lines. They take getting used to but are very helpful.
> Power off delay for audio and window functions
> Automatic door lock and unlock (usually works but not always).
> Individual tire pressure readings (long overdue).
(more opinions)
If Subaru wants to appeal to the $30,000+ car buyer, it needs a car with more creature and convenience features. The 18 is a fine car but it needs some attention to detail...
> The front wipers have only 4 variable speeds, plus low and high. There should be at least 5 variable speeds. One more speed would make a difference, at least when it semi-rains here in the NW.
> Still no way to manually open/close the power rear gate (safety issue)
> Rear gate height setting control is still too complex. Why not keep it simple and just have low, medium, high and full height selection?
> No rain sensing wipers. For a car intended for all weather conditions, its silly not to have it.
> Passenger seat still not height adjustable! Passengers, tell Subaru to fix this. Call 800 Subaru3.
> With pushbutton start, both key fobs are identical. They should have colored buttons to differentiate them since the key can move the driver's seat to a pre-set position.
> Needs quad sun visors. The 2 small sun visors are not up to the task, and there's only one per side so when its moved to the window to block the sun, there's nothing to block the windshield, so the occupant is swinging the visor back and forth (front to side, front to side etc) on sunny days. Quad sun visors were on cars 25 years ago...
> The Vehicle Monitor in the Car Info tab gives you a choice to display two out of four gauges. The four choices are instant economy, oil temp, average speed, and Accelerator Valve Opening (% of throttle) and there's no reason at all for all four gauges not being shown. Plus the accelerator valve opening is something few people care about. What people who care about engine info want is oil and coolant temp, instant and average fuel economy, average speed, distance to empty, vehicle altitude...

Blind Spot Detection and Rear Vehicle Detection System standard on Limited and Touring, optional on Premiums | (first offered on the 2015 Outback and Legacy) standard on Limited and Touring, optional on Premiumnew on 2018 the Blind Spot Detection symbol is now in the outside mirror's housing and larger and brighter than previous models The Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) system uses two radar units, each mounted underneath the sheet metal immediately below the rear taillights. To help avoid damage, the radar units are purposely mounted above the typical bumper impact line. The radar units send out signals to detect vehicles behind and to each side of the Subaru vehicle, especially those vehicles that might not be visible in the rearview mirrors. Blind Spot Detection (BSD) detects a vehicle alongside and/or slightly to the rear of you, Lane Change Assist warns of vehicles approaching in the next lane, Rear Cross Traffic Alert warns of vehicles approaching when you're backing out of a parking spot. Lane Change Assist (LCA) looks for vehicles farther back in an adjacent lane – about 220 feet behind the Subaru vehicle. If the vehicle detected is approaching quickly – at a speed that could bring it alongside the Subaru vehicle within a few seconds – Lane Change Assist will illuminate a warning icon in the exterior mirror on that side. If the driver signals a lane change, the warning icon in the mirror will flash rapidly. Blind Spot Detection (BSD) is standard on Limiteds, optional on Premiums . It will illuminate a warning icon in the outside mirror's housing when it detects a vehicle alongside and behind the Subaru vehicle in an area of about 22 feet x 11 feet. If the driver signals a lane change to that side, the warning icon in the mirror will flash.Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) uses the same radars and sensors to help detect vehicles that cannot be seen by the driver as they approach from either side. This is especially helpful when reversing from between two larger vehicles. The driver is alerted by a flashing icon in the appropriate exterior mirror, a flashing icon in the rear vision camera display, as well as an audible alert Standard on Limited and Touring, optional on Premium |
Eyesight | Eyesight Standard on 2018 Touring optional on Limited and Premium Eyesight uses two forward facing cameras to see the road ahead, and only works when they can 'see'. Don't block the camera's views, put anything reflective on the dash, hang anything from the rear view mirror, or clean the dash so that it's shiny. Replace the windshield wipers as necessary. The Eyesight cameras will turn off if the windshield fogs up or they can't see for any reason. Do not touch or try to clean the EyeSight camera lenses. It is imperative that extra precaution be used when cleaning the inside of the windshield, because over-spray from cleaners may impair or damage the cameras' lenses, which is not a warranty issue. This is the 4th year for the 3rd generation Eyesight on the Outback Eyesight has two small, forward facing cameras on either side of the rear view mirror. new for 2018 LED turn signals in the outside mirrors. S tandard on all Limited, Touring, and on Premium with optional eyesightnew for 2018 Steering Responsive LED headlights with auto aiming. Included with optional Eyesight on Limited models, standard on all 3.6 Limited and all Touring models. Not available on Premiums. New for 2018- when Lane Keep Assist is turned on, it will continue to be on when the car is re-started, so it no longer needs to be turned on each time the car is restarted New for 2018 the large High Beam Assist sensor (requires Eyesight) in front on the rear view mirror is gone on the Limited and Touring models, but it is still on the Premium High Beam Assist- included with optional Eyesight on Premium and Limited models. Standard on Touring because Eyesight is standard. Switches headlight from high beam to low beam when it sees an approaching car. Only works when you have the high beams on. For dark road driving since people don't usually have high beams on in urban areas or on well lit roads. Uses a sensor behind the rear view mirror. Reverse Automatic B raking- Standard on Touring, and included with optional Eyesight on Limited models. Not available on Premiums. 4 sensors in the back bumper detect close objects and wil l stop the car before low speed impact (5mph or less) > new for 2018 LED headlights, Steering ResponsiveStandard on 3.6 Limited and all Touring, included with optional Eyesight on Limited models. Not available on Premiums. LED headlights have a clean bright light, Steering responsive turns the headlights slightly with the steering wheel. > Steering responsive fog lights are included on Premium with optional Eyesight. They were previously on Limited and Touring > High Beam Assist- included with optional Eyesight on Premium and Limited models. Standard on Touring because eyesight is standard. Switches headlight high beams to low beams when it seen an approaching car when you have the high beams on (was new on 2017 models). New for 2018 Eyesight High Beam Assist sensor on Limited and Touring is now integrated into the Eyesight cameras. Premium models still have the large center sensor in front of the rear view mirror that was also on the 17 Limited and Touring > Reverse Automatic braking- included with optional Eyesight on Limited models. Not available on Premium models. Standard on Touring models 4 sensors in the back bumper detect close objects and will stop the car before impact. (was new on 2017 models) > Lane Keep Assist uses the car's electric power steering to help keep the car in its lane at highway speeds over 40mph. (was new on the 2016 model) Note: t his function has a steering wheel switch and can be turned on/off by the driver. New for 2018- when turned on, Lane Keep Assist will continue to be on when the car is re-started so it no longer needs to be turned on each time the car is restarted > Active Cruise Control combines the benefits of cruise control with active monitoring of the road ahead. It issues warnings and activates automatic braking when needed. Adaptive Cruise Control can regulate vehicle speed in order to keep a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. It does not replace conventional cruise control, which can still be used when desired. > Pre-Collision Braking can recognize an impending collision, alert the driver and automatically apply the brakes to help avoid a collision or minimize the impact when a collision is inevitable. > Pre-Collision Brake Assist- If Eyesight recognizes an impending collision and the driver is applying the brakes but not with enough force, Pre-Collision Brake Assist automatically applies up to full braking pressure in order to try to shorten braking distances. > Pre-Collision Throttle Management is designed to help prevent drivers from accelerating into a stopped vehicle or other obstacle in front of them. It warns the driver and reduces engine power until he or she applies the brakes to avoid an impact. > Lead Vehicle Start Alert is a helpful EyeSight feature that alerts the driver when his or her vehicle remains stopped after a vehicle in front has started to move away. > Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they unintentionally move out of their travel lane. It takes no corrective vehicle action other than issuing visual and audible warnings. > Lane Sway Warning acts in a similar way, detecting unusual back and forth vehicle movement within the lane of travel. Lane Departure Warning works at all speeds, while Lane Sway Warning only operates at speeds over 32 mph. Eyesight cars have three windshield washer squirters, with the middle one to clean in front of the cameras. The camera's field of view is about 35 degrees horizontally from the center of the windshield. The camera's field of vision extends up to about 360 feet in front of the vehicle, but objects very close to the vehicle may not be detected Eyesight works to recognize obstacles up to about a 30-mph (or less) speed differential. Essentially, EyeSight needs time to recognize an object or potential obstacle. If the speed difference between the EyeSight vehicle and the object is greater than up to 30 mph, the object will likely not be detected in time for Eyesight to stop the car, ie a car at 60mph running into a wall for example. Emissions | new all 2017 2.5L Outbacks are PZEV here is a brief, simple summary. PZEV is Partial Zero Emission Vehicle. The EPA says PZEV is the cleanest running gas car on today's market based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness. What it does 1. A charcoal canister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't evaporate. 2. Fuel injectors close tighter when they're not in use. 3. It has a finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of precious metal. 4. The engine's electronic brain is set to run hotter at start up so the catalytic converter heats up faster. | PZEV is not available on the 3.6L
Brakes | 4 wheel disc, 4 channel anti-lock, low wear indicator Brake override system stops car if both brake and gas pedals are pressed. Brake assist for maximum brake pressure front: 12.4 ventilated front disc with dual caliper piston Electric parking brake with auto release when gas pedal is pressed, and Hill Holder function that the drivers turns on/off.
Reverse Automatic Braking (was new on 2017s) 4 sensors in the rear bumper detect objects, beeps, displays colored squares indicating distance, and helps stop the car before impact when in reverse at very low speeds | -- | -- | O req Eyesight | S | O req Eyesight | S |
Parking brake | The electric parking brake button and Hill Holder buttons are in the center console All models use an Electric Parking Brake with Auto Release and Hill Holder (driver turns on or off). Auto parking brake release- wear seatbelt, put car in gear, lightly press gas pedal. To use in as emergency brake lightly pull the brake button up to activate but only in an serious emergency when you cannot normally brake. This will cause your rear wheels to lock so be very careful. Pull the brake button UP to activate the brakes, push it down to release them.
Hill Holder Brake system Incline Start Assist | If the Hill Holder function is turned on, when you restart the car it is on (was new on 2013 models). The Hill Holder button is on the center console next to the XMode button The Hill Holder brake system is standard on all models. It uses the electric parking brake. The system can be turned on by pressing the Hill Holder button in the center console. A green image of a car on an incline is in the upper right dash comes on (see image). When stopping on a hill 5% or steeper, either going forward up or backwards down a hill, the Hill Holder activates the electric parking brake and holds the car from rolling. Stepping on the gas releases the brake so the car will move. Works going up or backwards down an incline. Note: if you are already stopped on an incline and did not press the Hill Holder button, pull up the Parking Brake button - it works exactly the same. Incline Start Assist h olds the vehicle from rolling back for 1.5 seconds as the driver moves their foot from the brake to the gas pedal (was new for 2015s)
Steering | Note: steering was retuned on the 2016 model for a more accurate steering and also to dampen any movement of the steering wheel due to Eyesight's Lane Keep Assist function Electric power assisted steering (EPAS) Steering ratio 14:1 turning circle, curb to curb 36.1 ft steering turns lock-to-lock 2.82

Safety Plus and Security Plus
(was new on the 2016 model) if you have a
Outback Premium, Limited, Touring
note: not on base Outback 2,5i Helps with notification in an emergency accident/collision, if you're locked out, lost, car is stolen, broken down, with emergency services, and with mechanical issues and notification.
Important Note- this system does NOT work if the car's battery is dead, so in the event of a dead battery or an accident where the battery is dislodged, have your cellphone handy because the Starlink won't work.
There are 3 SiriusXM staffed call centers in the U.S. (in Texas and Utah)
AT&T provides the cellular service for emergency (red SOS button) and user requested roadside assistance (blue button) services via an integrated 4G phone connection. The phone has a lithium backup battery so it has power in the event of an accident. The red and blue buttons are in the overhead console. The car does need to be in an area with AT&T cell coverage for the connection to work (check coverage at http://att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html).
Sirius/XM provides the telematics
So if you have an iphone or android, download both the Subaru Starlink and MySubaru apps
Dealer salesperson will activate the program at time of vehicle purchase for your free year.
Add years later on mysubaru.com or by calling 855-753-2495

| - Subaru Starlink connected call buttons are in the overhead console. In an emergency, you don't have to fumble looking for a phone, dialing a number, or even know where you are. Just reach up and tap the button! Outback and Legacy- Pin Code Access
Requires Keyless Access with Pushbutton Start
What is it? A back-up unlock system so you can get into the car when you dont have a key fob handy. To use it, you have to program in a series of 5 digits by tapping the rear gate lock button the same number of times as each of the 5 digits. (ie twice for 2, four times for 4, five times for the digit 5, and this is done for each of the 5 digits you programmed in).
Then you can lock and unlock the door by tapping the rear gate lock button repeatedly in the series that you programmed in.
Note- the PIN Code Access is rather difficult to do... it can be frustrating to tap this small, hard to see button correctly in a series of 5 multiple taps. You cannot unlock by PIN Code Access in the following cases NOTE
The solution is for the Pin Code Access to only be two digits. Two would be much easier to do and still provide security against someone trying to randomly tap the code
Preparation to register a 5-digit security Pin Code
1. Close all doors including rear gate.
2. Press and hold the button on the access key. Then all doors, including rear gate, will be locked.
3. Keep the button pressed, and press the rear lock button on the gate within 5 seconds after step 2.
4. Press and hold the rear lock button on the gate for more than 5 seconds. Then a chirp will sound.
5. Press the button on the access key while the chirp sounds. Then the chirp will stop and the preparation is complete
For example, to register 32468 as the PIN code, perform the following procedure on an Outback
1. Press the rear lock button three times.
2. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button twice.
3. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button four times.
4. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button six times.
5. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button eight times.
6. Perform steps 1 to 5 again within approximately 30 seconds after the buzzer starts sounding intermittently.
7. All doors (including rear gate) will be unlocked and locked.
Then the PIN code will be registered.
If you make an error during the registration procedure, open the driver's door and then close it.
Then start over from the procedure described in Preparation above
To protect your vehicle from theft, you cannot register 5 digit codes such as 00000, 11111 to 99999, or 12345.
Do not register your vehicle license plate number or simple numbers such as11122 or 12121.
- when the access key is within the operating ranges
- when the ignition switch is in the ACC or ON position
- If you make an operation error during the unlocking procedure, start over with the unlocking procedure after waiting for 5 seconds or longer.
- To protect your vehicle from theft, a buzzer will sound if incorrect PIN codes are entered five times continuously. If this occurs, you cannot unlock the doors by PIN Code Access for 5 minutes.
disable the Outback and Legacy keyless access proximity key in order to hide it in the car when camping, swimming, skiing, biking: remove the emergency key to carry with you to get back in the car (yes the alarm will go off when you open the door until you unwrap the proximity key), wrap the proximity key in foil, then hide it and hope no one finds it and steals the car.

How to order a Subaru When a car is ordered Please be sure this is the right car and you're willing to wait. Cancelled orders can affect a dealer's supply. The car arrives with protective plastic on the upper surfaces. The dealer service dept will need to do a PDI (pre-delivery inspection), and then the car will be cleaned for the agreed pick-up time. Note that Interest rates and lease programs are what is current when the car is picked up and contracts signed, when its actually purchased, not when the car is ordered. Subaru announces interest rates and lease programs monthly. And trade values can change over the order time. The trade will be checked when the purchase is completed. Subaru's GTP - guaranteed trade program - is good for late model Subaru trade-ins. Its on www.Subaru.com > for owners. Have your VIN handy. And you'll get the car you want!

Subarus are popular cars, sometimes the car you want isn't on the lot.
And some models can very very difficult to get.
That's pretty common with Subaru.
Hopefully there's more than one color or model you'll be happy with.
But... when there's no car, the choices are:
waiting and hoping the right car shows up one day,
compromising on what you want,
your dealer finds and can get a car from another local dealer (but they're hard to get everyplace)
or .... you factory order what you want! Its all easy.
Here's how it works
You and the salesperson work through the model, option package, color, and accessories, and agree on a price for the car.
Placing the order is easy - dealers have access to Subaru's quick online form. Its just a few fast, simple, pages.
The order form needs the details on the car, and the buyer's name, address, phone and email.
Yes, Subaru expects the dealer to collect a deposit when the order is placed.
Orders are allocated in the beginning of the month and take around 2 full months, but it depends on the model and it can be shorter or longer.
When an order is placed, the dealer will get a VON- vehicle order number- unless there's a car already in the system that can be adapted to fit the order and then there might be a VIN.
ETA- estimated time of arrival-, the usual fresh order ETA will probably be a generic "last week of (month)" which will generally be the end of the 2nd full month after the order is placed.
The ETA will change as time passes, and eventually there will be a VIN and an exact ETA date, though that date is subject to, and frequently does, change.
Your dealer or salesperson should check the ETA from time to time and notify you of any changes.
The dealer wants you to get the car as soon as possible but doesn't control the ETA.
